Is being obese and/or having an obese child a sign of neglect, a need for intervention?

Is asked this question yesterday and thought that it would be great to share people's replies and insights. I was intending on getting feedback to write an article but felt that this was more real.

Ruben Rojas Is childhood obesity child abuse? Who is to blame? What is the cure?

Hold on..Imma let you finish....Bush was the BEST scapegoat of ALL TIME! of ALL TIME!

But serious answer, not sure who's to blame really. If you've been raised on fast food then its really hard to break the cycle. However, living in our current information age there's no excuse not to start taking personal responsibility for one's own habits. The facts are there if you choose to listen or not. After a certain age it no longer becomes parental responsibility but a personal one?

I beleive that a child learns from example...DUH!!! Who doesn't? And if this child is taught bad habits from the get-go then guess what FAT Happens and this kid will fall into what I like to call the American Food Blunder....

Yes, there does come a point when that individual becomes self-aware and decides for themselves what to eat, but they still have a choice and if at that point they choose wrong then that's on them... But when a parent feeds their child fast food 24/7 365 days a year then guess what that is parental neglect!!!

Parents that feed their kids fast food also do so b/c they don't have alot of money so they go for cheap. U can buy a rugrat an entire gut filling meal for 3.50 and get a toy. U can't fill a kids belly with healthy food for so cheap! Fast food corp's know this. They prey on poor people knowing that they are their biggest customer base. Yes, there are people who aren't poor and know that should be eating better, but I think the majority are parents who don't have alot of money to feed their kids. You should read Fast Food Nation. :)

True, BUT you've gotta have a farmers market in ur area.... I can't say I've ever seen one here in the heart of the barrio of Van nuys. The poor people I'm talking about work long ass hours, at typically menial jobs with minimum wage, who are too tired to cook. Yes, it's messing up their kids.... Do they know better? No. Mainly because that's how they were brought up. They want to feed their kids for what meager money they have. I think it is worse when u see fat kids of affluent and educated persons who have the ability to pay for and/or knowledge that they shouldn't be feeding crap to their kids, but still do it anyways :(.

Thanks for throwing out such a thought provoking question out there :)

Again very true, but there is a Food 4 Less there and a Value Plus and many low priced markets. Where meat is 1.99 per pound, fruit and veggies are super cheap too...

I'm just saying...

It is still neglect from the parent because they can choose other foods. Shoot rice & beans are better than French Fries and white bread... Yes, you can blame lack of education, having kids too young, being poor, but why not DO WHAT GRANDMA TAUGHT YA? Right, they did have some good stuff back them... always choosing real food over crap.

A $1 bag of Oranges or a $1 donut???

Very complicated question, all I can advise to do is drive out of the greater LA area (nort east) and visit those truck stop diners, or any other diners and there you will find your answer. Just make sure to smoke some gongh before visiting to help make some sense of whats really going on. I can't believe my eyes when I go out to these places, guts to the knees, kankles larger than their thighs, long droopy faces, bleeding sores, 0 fashion sense. Just shoveling down all you can eat battered buffet slop. One diner in particular has me gagging at the thought of it. Its the Tejon travel center diner off the 5N just past frazier. You won't believe your fucking eyes.

Great answer, Ruben! I believe you've won me over to your POV. The truth is, if u love ur kids, u don't want them to be fat. U do whatever it takes to feed them healthy as opposed to cheap and easy!! :)

I remember having this conversation when I was super super super broke right out of college living in a craptastic neighborhood in Brooklyn (no good grocerys anywhere nearby). I lived on less than $100 a month for food.
Every day I cut up 2 small apples, 2 carrots, 2 stalks of celery and carried it all day. High fiber, quick energy, lots of vitamins.
I bought the protein that was on sale, in bulk and used my freezer. I ate a lot of vegetarian meals. I also tried new things- you know what is cheap, available and tasty in a Jamaican neighborhood in Brooklyn? Goat meat, don't be afraid to try new things.
Instead of shopping like a New Yorker and buying new groceries every day, I would take a rolling suitcase on the subway to the Pathmark or Food 4 Less and shop carefully.
Crockpots mean no cooking time. Roasted Potatoes and rice and beans keep a long time. And the 3.50 I spent for 2 weeks of apples and carrots and celery did me a lot more good than any Happy Meal.

So I got kicked out of McDonald's (long story, no violence, no yelling, no threats demanding Mangers name and number) 4 years ago next month and haven't eaten at one since nor do I allow my kids to eat there... Why is my daughter's school fundraiser lunchtime stretch Hummer Limo ride to... McDonalds...?!?!

Well Rue I have to say you have very valid point in what you say…
You know I now live in Greece, well let me tell ya that out here you hardly see any obese kids or grown ups…(I said hardly not ever)now don’t get me wrong I didn’t say they all have gorgeous bodies like you and are super skinny but most look healthy…or at least healthy enough…People out here eat a lot of home cooked meals…meaning they eat much healthier because they follow the do what grandma taught ya just like you said rule…Mostly everything people cook here is fresh…mostly organic…and mostly very very healthy ,now of course they are exceptions as well… Most of the restaurants here are very healthy ,meaning that the ingredient they use are very pure which I think is very important. Now you know I’m a vegetarian but I have to say that the meat and sea food here is very different than the ones used in the states…what I mean by that is that it’s sold as freshly as possible you rarely see any frozen meat/sea food in anyones house and the way they raise their animals that are later slaughtered is very different than being feed and breed in a 2 by 4 full of shit hole…I assure you that the animals are extremely well feed and extremely well brought up here. They keep them cleaner that clean…It makes me sad that they do this in order to later on kill them but just for your info if you ate meet here you would know what I am talking about….you actually eat chicken not a dirty nasty feathered thing full of hormones and shit….anyways you get my point…
So after blabbing for so long my point is this….people need to spend time cooking in order to be healthy they must find the time because the food you eat is the most important factor in ones life…so if you decide to have kids you need to realize that in order to keep them healthy you must cook pure fresh food for them and once they hit an age where they can cook on their own then they cook for the parents as well
It has nothing to do with the amount of money you can spend but the choices you make…period…
Ok thats all...
Ok that’s all

@Andre Have you seen www.peopleofwalmart.com?

@Rachel great example thank you for sharing that and it proves one of the points perfectly.

@Val thank you for stating that. It is def true tha no other country comes close in comparison at the amount of obesisty that plagues America. Fresh food will always prevail and keep you healthier and lean. Processed food is the death of the human race.

**If you do not cook for yourself you are never in control of your health. I am not saying do not go out to eat and enjoy yurselves from tiem to time and also just because you assume it is healthy it is good for you. What I am saying is you never know the quality of the ingredients and all of the ingredients that is placed into your food UNLESS YOU PREPARE AND COOK IT for youselves.**

Should the courts be allowed to take your obese child?
